Yankees Make Deadline Splash, Trade For Jazz Chisholm From The Marlins
The New York Yankees are shoring up their struggling offense.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Yankees are acquiring infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins. While the full return has not yet been reported, it's arguably the biggest deadline deal yet, given Chisholm's profile and past production.
Chisholm has yet to reach the heights of his 2022 season, but remains an above-average hitter who also contributes on the bases and provides some positional versatility. And moving to the short right field porch of Yankee Stadium might also help boost his production even further.
Jazz Chisholm A Good Fit For Struggling New York Yankees
The Yankees have been desperate for help on offense, dealing with disappointing performances all over the field outside of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
Anthony Volpe started hot, but has cooled significantly to a below average 97 wRC+, Gleyber Torres also has been below average, hitting just .237 with a .369 slugging percentage. Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo have been, well, bad. Neither has an on base percentage over .300, and Grisham's hitting in the low .180's. Then there's DJ LeMahieu and his sub-.500 OPS.
Chisholm can immediately jump into the starting outfield, or supplant Torres at second base. While his 104 wRC+ leaves something to be desired, it's a significant improvement over the rotation the Yankees have been using. Importantly too, Chisholm appears to be a good fit for Yankee Stadium.
While he has 13 homers this season, per Baseball Savant, he'd have 19 if he played all his games at Yankee Stadium. An illustration of all his hits this season overlaid at Yankee Stadium shows how many doubles would be homers given smaller dimensions in New York.
Despite their struggles, the Yankees are just two games behind the first place Baltimore Orioles and squarely in the top AL wild card spot. But with today's news, Yankees fans can feel a bit better about locking up a playoff spot and making a comeback in the AL East.
