Glow-In-The-Dark Baseball Game Is Absolutely Fantastic

In May, the Tri-City Chilli Peppers (a collegiate summer league baseball team in the Coastal Plain League) announced that they’d be playing a game of "Cosmic Baseball." Essentially, that means that the baseballs, player’s equipment, and everything else at the ballpark would be glow-in-the dark.

A bold and risky move, no doubt, but a risk that I was certainly on board with when I first heard the news.

Saturday night, Tri-City played the Greenbrier Knights in Colonial Heights, VA., in what is widely considered the first major sporting event to be played under black lights.

It was absolutely incredible.

Just imagine the coolness of what you see when you walk in your local bowling alley on a "Glow Bowling" night (I assume you think it’s cool, because I certainly do). The multiply that by 100, and you’ve got what happened on the diamond last night.

I mean just look at that! I’m geeking out as I type this. Both those teams have unlocked a level of coolness the baseball world has never seen.

Yes, the ball was hard to track for defenders. That became apparent in the first inning, when the ball jumped over the center fielder's head and allowed the Chilli Peppers to score an inside-the-park home run.

But if you’re worried about the unusual playing format negatively impacting offensive production, don’t. Tri-City won 9-4, and 13 runs in the first glow-in-the-dark game ever isn’t too shabby.

Unsurprisingly, a large contingent of players have expressed interest in joining the Chilli Peppers since this game was announced. The best part is that last night’s game isn’t the last Cosmic Baseball game on tap. There are three more scheduled for the season - June 15, June 28, and July 20.

I can’t wait for more.
