20-Year-Old Beats Novak Djokovic Who Was -5000 To Win

Congratulations to whomever took the great Luca Nardi in last night's Indiana Wells tennis tournament to upset Novak Djokovic at +1800 odds. Lunch is on you, my friend.

The No. 123 ranked Italian Nardi upset the world's best Novak Djokovic last night in three sets as Joker - the (-5000) favorite was shockingly sent home from the tournament in the Round of 32. Let's pour one out for all sports bettors and the tennis star himself who woke up this morning asking, "What in the hell just happened?"

By comparison, Oppenheimer was a -5000 favorite to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Nardi beating the film would be like Oppenheimer losing to Indiana Jones 5 (Yes, there was a fifth one that came out last year. The more ya know!).

'I'M HAVING A BAD DAY'

"I could have done EVERYTHING differently… very poor performance from my side. I have no titles this year, and it's something I'm not used to. It's part of the sport, you have to accept it - you win some, you lose some," a bewildered Novak told reporters after his loss.

Djokovic is currently on an unusual rut these days - having not won a single tournament this year so far.

"I guess every trophy that comes my way [in the future] is going to be great obviously to break the negative cycle that I've been having. I haven't been close to my best."

LUCKY LOSER LUCA

Meanwhile, Luca Nardi - who only faced Djokovic because he was a ‘Lucky Loser,’ was in disbelief after the match. So much so, that he didn't even know who he would play in the next round. A lucky loser is when a player loses a match but still advances after taking the spot of someone who withdraws due to injury.

Ranked at No. 123 in the world, Nardi became the lowest player to ever defeat Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 or a grand slam event.

"I don’t know [how I held my nerve]," Nardi said with one of the biggest smiles one has ever seen. "I think it is a miracle, because I am a 20-year-old guy, 100 in the world, and beating Novak. It’s crazy."

We'll see if Nardi can continue his good luck when he faces No. 17 Tommy Paul tomorrow night.
