USWNT Embarrassed In 2-0 Loss To Mexico For First Home Defeat Against CONCACAF Opponent Since 2000
The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) were thoroughly outplayed in a 2-0 loss to Mexico in the final match of group play in the Gold Cup.
La Trí were not intimidated by the fact that they had not beaten the USWNT in 13 years, or that the Americans had not lost to a North American team on home soil since 2000 (the year I was born). Instead of being intimidated by the moment, the Mexicans walked right into Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., and showed their rivals no mercy.
Lisbeth Ovalle began the scoring in the 38th minute. After Becky Sauerbrunn failed to handle a volley, Ovalle pounced on an errant clear, dangled around goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, and lobbed a shot into the net to give the visitors a shock lead.
Sauerbrunn was probably too busy thinking about more ways to advocate for transgenders in girls' high school sports to safely clear the ball.
The match remained at 1-0 until two minutes into stoppage time. That’s when Mayra Pelayo scored an absolute rocket from well outside the box to dash any American hopes of a comeback.
Looks like the men aren't the only ones who can beat their rivals with a "Dos a Cero" final score.
Mexico’s win was just their second in the history of this rivalry. The USWNT now holds a 40-2-1 edge in head-to-head matches.
"They went out and they were bold, they were brave, with the dream of playing a good game against the United States," Mexico coach Pedro Lopez Ramos said through an interpreter.
Fortunately for the Americans, the loss does not doom them to being eliminated from the tournament. Even with a defeat, they finished second in their group and will advance to the quarterfinals.
However, striker Alex Morgan said they’ll have to regroup quickly with the best of the competition coming their way.
"We have to turn it around, we have to pick our heads back up and know that this wasn't nearly our best, and when we are our best, we can play and compete and beat anyone," Morgan said.
Not only does the USWNT have the Gold Cup to finish off, but the Summer Olympics are just months away. Now would be a good time for the Americans to start playing their best soccer.
