Luke Fickell Drops Unexpected Wisconsin QB Update, Might Drastically Change The Dynamics

It sounds like Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke has taken some significant steps forward since joining the Badgers.

Van Dyke transferred to Wisconsin after an up and down career at Miami. The expectation has been since he made the move that he'll be the starter, but Braedyn Locke definitely gave him everything TVD could handle in spring camp.

While head coach Luke Fickell hasn't officially named Van Dyke the starter, all signs point to the decision already being a done deal, but fans might be in for a bit of a surprise as to his abilities:

He's got some speed in him these days.

Luke Fickell discusses Tyler Van Dyke's improved athleticism.

"Since he's been here - his ability to train - he's a different looking kid from when he walked in the door. The way he ran six, seven, eight months ago to the way he runs right now is completely different," Fickell said during a Tuesday interview with OutKick's Dan Dakich.

First off, what a great question from Dakich. Whoever suggested that question is a genius. Unfortunately, we just don't know who that unsung hero is, but I digress.

What I find really interesting about this is that his comments could change the dynamics of the offense. Tyler Van Dyke hasn't ever been known as a physical specimen. You definitely don't think about a dual-threat QB when you watch him play. He's not unathletic, but he's certainly more of a traditional passer.

If Van Dyke can open things up with his legs, then it allows the air raid offense to really flourish more than if he's immobile in the pocket.

It's a complete game-changer for Fickell and OC Phil Longo. It adds an unexpected dimension to the offense. My biggest concern about Van Dyke is that he simply can't buy time with his feet like the offense requires. If that's no longer the case, which remains to be seen, then Wisconsin's offense could take a much-needed step forward in 2024.

More than anything, I'm just ready to see what Wisconsin can bring to the table this season after a really disappointing 2023 campaign. Hopefully, Fickell and company get the job done. Let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
