TSN Sends Cameraman Onto Ice To Capture Incredible Fight At Memorial Cup
The Memorial Cup is in full-swing and the London Knights won their first two games at the historic tournament in 2024, capturing a win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday, 5-4.
For those who aren't aware, the Memorial Cup is an annual tournament to determine the champion of the CHL (Canadian Hockey League). The CHL comprises three major-junior Canadian hockey leagues, the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) and the WHL (Western Hockey League).
That's the top level in Canadian junior hockey and nearly all Canadian-born hockey players drafted into the NHL play in one of the three leagues. Connor McDavid, for example, played in the OHL for the Erie Otters (shout out my hometown, Erie, Pennsylvania).
The champions of each league, along with the team from the host city (which rotates yearly between the three leagues) compete for the crown of CHL champion.
The London Knights won the OHL this season, the Moose Jaw Warriors won the WHL and the Drummondville Voltigeurs captured the QMJHL title. The Saginaw Spirit are the host team, making this the first Memorial Cup to be held in the United States since 1998.
The tournament starts with a round-robin format, so each team plays one game against each opponent. After that, the team with the best record advances to the finals and the teams that finish second and third rematch in a semifinal to play the #1 seed for the title.
On Sunday, the Knights defeated Moose Jaw, moving them to 2-0 and guaranteeing a spot in the next stage of the tournament. However, the highlight of the game was a fight between Knights assistant captain Max McCue (a New York Rangers prospect) and Warriors defenseman Kalem Parker (a Minnesota Wild prospect).
Not only was the fight itself incredible, but TSN – the network that broadcasts the Memorial Cup) sent a cameraman out onto the ice to film the bout from some incredible angles. The skilled cameraman skated around the pair as they battled, capturing unique angles throughout the match.
The NHL and American broadcast networks should take note. This is awesome. Hockey needs ways to draw fans to the television and this is an easy way to do it.
As far as the tournament goes, the Knights now face the host – and fellow OHL team – Saginaw Spirit (also 2-0 in the Memorial Cup) on Wednesday for a ticket straight to the finals.
The loser of that game will play the winner of the Moose Jaw and Drummondville (both teams are 0-2) match on Tuesday night. That duo will form the semifinals, who will play for a spot in the championship.
The Memorial Cup Final is scheduled for June 2.
