Maples Leafs Fan Randomly Throws Older Man's Hat Onto Ice After Hat Trick, Painful Awkwardness Ensues

A Toronto Maple Leafs fan attempted to go viral following an Auston Matthew hat trick. And while he accomplished that goal, he did so for all the wrong reasons.

The now-viral moment occurred during the Leafs' overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers on February 15. Matthews managed to complete his hat trick in the second period, and as the celebration unfolded, a Leafs fan elected to throw a hat onto the ice, only it wasn't his own.

The hat, a $300 fedora, belonged to 73-year-old season ticket holder John Hamilton who said he was "surprised" when he saw his hat fly onto the ice.

The video shows the fan awkwardly looking into the camera before tossing Hamilton's hat over the glass. Hamilton immediately turned around and laid into the fan, whose face instantly turned red as he took the berating from the long-time season ticket holder.

"He did sit down in his seat and got very red in the face because a number of people were around him," Hamilton said. "I think he didn’t expect the reaction that he got, and I think he was suddenly going ‘Oops wonder what happened here.'"

The game, nor the hat, were completely lost.

The fedora was back in Hamilton's possession within about five minutes after he was able to get the attention of the ice crew who tossed it back over the glass.

He explained that the fan who actually tossed the hat never apologized to him, but the person filming the video did a number of different times and bought beers for the group.

"Several times he apologized, I’m gonna guess four or five times, got back into the (Air Canada) Signature Club and he ordered the staff to get us beers for the three buddies and myself," Hamilton explained.

Hamilton also noted that the fan who tossed his fedora may have been kicked out of the arena given that he didn't see him again after the second intermission.
