Three UNC Football Players Charged In Deadly Crash

A fatal Jan. 21 crash in Chapel Hill resulted in 10 people being charged, three of whom are current football players at UNC. The high-speed crash resulted in the death of 20-year-old Molly Rotunda, a student at the University of North Carolina. As reported by ABC11, Alcohol Law Enforcement charged seven people responsible for selling alcohol to minors involved in the fatal crash.

The person behind the wheel, Flemeeja Brewer, appeared in court on Monday for a preliminary hearing. Brewer hit speeds of 124 mph in a reported 45 mph zone. Rotunda accompanied Brewer and died as a passenger in the single-car crash. The vehicle carried three passengers, including Brianna Tiera Pinson, who survived the crash alongside Brewer with non-life-threatening injuries.

Travis Shaw, a defensive lineman for the Tar Heels, reportedly purchased alcohol consumed at the party by Brewer, Rotunda (a minor) and Pinson before they got into the fatal crash. UNC offensive lineman Zach Rice and defensive end Malaki Hamrick were charged as part of the investigation; both are suspected of underage drinking, with Hamrick also answering for conducting a vehicle following the boozy party. As reported by The Daily Tar Heel, UNC's interim Chancellor Lee Roberts acknowledged the fatal incident involving the departed student, expressing his condolences to the family.

Flemeeja Brewer is expected to return to court on April 30.
