Thom Brennaman Will Be Back In The Booth This Fall After Four-Year Exile
Thom Brennaman, who was fired from his broadcasting jobs four years ago after using a homophobic slur on air, will be back in the booth this fall.
Per "The Athletic’s" Andrew Marchand, The CW will start having Brennaman call games for its Pac-12 football package, with his first assignment being the Oregon State vs. Idaho State game. As the season progresses, he will primarily be calling ACC games.
"There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they’re rolling the dice," Brennaman told The Athletics. "They don’t have to do this."
That roll of the dice comes after an incident that took place during the summer of 2020, when he was calling a Cincinnati Reds vs. Kansas City Royals game for Fox Sports Ohio. He described Kansas City as "one of the f*g capitals of the world," a comment that was picked up by a hot mic.
Shortly thereafter, he was alerted that the comment was heard on live TV. Knowing his career was in jeopardy, he offered an apology - while Nick Castellanos was in the process of hitting a homerun (this quickly became a viral meme).
He not only lost his job with Fox Sports Ohio, he lost his job with Fox Sports itself, despite being the No. 2 option for the network in calling NFL and MLB games behind only Joe Buck.
"Within seven hours, I was basically fired from everything," Brennaman, 60, said.
But on August 31st, he will have a chance to reignite his career by calling college football. Best of luck to Brennaman.
