Texas WR Xavier Worthy Sets New 40-Yard Dash Record At NFL Combine
How long does it take for a longhorn bull to run 40 yards at the NFL Combine? Not that long at all, apparently.
Now, obviously, I don’t mean a real longhorn. Those animals did not get clearance to show off their speed in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The longhorn I’m talking about is former Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, a dynamic athlete in the Burnt Orange’s high-octane offense. Heading into the Combine, NFL scouts weren’t too keen on his small frame (he’s only 160 pounds) and some drop issues. But one thing he definitely had going for him was speed; he was considered the fastest wide receiver in this class.
But today, this longhorn proved he’s not just the fastest guy in his position this year. He showed he’s historically fast.
Worthy lined up to run the 40-yard dash, and recorded a dizzying 4.25 time. But he got one more chance to run, and beat his own time by three one hundredths of a second.
At least, that's what we thought at first. Upon further review, judges determined that Worthy ran a 4.21 on his second try.
That, folks, is a new NFL Combine record. Worthy broke John Ross’ previous mark of 4.22 set in 2017.
I can’t think of a more worthy player to hold the new record. See what I did there? It’s okay, you can roll your eyes.
Worthy’s speed caught the attention of several current and former NFL stars, including Tyreek Hill, a blazing speedster himself.
In just 14 games at Texas during his senior season, Worthy totaled 75 receptions for 1,014 and five touchdowns. With the speed he just displayed, who knows what numbers he could put up in the NFL.
He could make Longhorns everywhere proud (the ones that play football, not the animals).
