Steelers Dump Mitch Trubisky After 2 Seasons, Still Haunted By Patrick Mahomes' Greatness
As Patrick Mahomes celebrates his third Super Bowl win, former highly-picked quarterback Mitchell Trubisky searches for his fourth team.
The Mitch Trubisky Experiment is over in Pittsburgh after the Steelers announced Monday that the team is ‘mutually splitting’ with its backup quarterback.
Trubisky, 29, hits free agency early, albeit at an all-time low value.
Emerging out of a backup role in Buffalo two seasons ago, Trubisky hit the 2022 FA QB pool with solid value. That is, until he went to Pittsburgh to solidify his lore as a ‘bust.’ And while it's a tough assessment to make, being selected ahead of the up-and-coming NFL GOAT in the draft has its consequences.
Throughout most of his tenure in Pittsburgh, the Steelers opted to start Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph over Trubisky. The vet started seven games for the Steelers (2-5), throwing eight interceptions and 10 interceptions (completing 63.8% of his passes).
Pittsburgh imagined Trubisky to be a capable starter and help ease Kenny Pickett's transition into the NFL. But the Steelers eventually realized neither option was viable and decided to go into this offseason, looking to revitalize the position after back-to-back seasons of offensively inept football.
Meanwhile, Chicago Bears fans still ache at the thought of drafting Trubisky with the No. 2 pick in 2017 — selected several spots ahead of Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes.
While a single player rarely holds the power to turn a franchise around, Mahomes' legacy at the still-young age of 28 has proven that the Texas Tech product was truly the once-in-a-generation talent not worth whiffing on.
