Stanley Cup Final Includes Incredible Dueling National Anthems Prior To Panthers-Oilers
There's nothing better in sports than Game 7. NHL fans were fortunate enough to see the Edmonton Oilers storm back from a 3-0 deficit against the Florida Panthers to send the Stanley Cup Final to Game 7 on Monday.
But before the action could begin on the ice, there was a clear battle in the stands. The Panthers held home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final, meaning they got to host Game 7.
Interestingly, the team invited Alanis Morissette – who was born in Canada – to sing both the Canadian and American national anthems. They announced that she has dual citizenship in both countries, and it made sense for this battle of North America.
Understood, but I personally would have thought the Panthers would have invited the most American possible singer to sing the anthem. Think, I don't know … maybe Kid Rock?
But they didn't. They invited Morissette – much to the delight of the Oilers fans in attendance. And there were A LOT of people who made the trek all the way from Edmonton to Sunrise, Florida.
Morissette got a bit of a mixed review when she was announced. Clearly, some Florida fans agreed with me and thought a Canadian singer was blasphemous. But the Oilers fans in attendance let their voices be heard during the Canadian National Anthem.
But people in Florida – one of the most shining beacons of freedom in the United States – weren't going to just let that slide. The American fans proudly belted out our national anthem alongside Morissette.
Man, it's hard not to get hyped up after that. Seeing some national pride on display in such a big spot – for both countries, honestly – is extremely refreshing.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
