Sky Coach Teresa Witherspoon Condemns Chennedy Carter's Cheap Shot On Caitlin Clark
Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Witherspoon admits that Chennedy Carter's rough hip-check on Caitlin Clark crossed a line.
With just seconds remaining in the third quarter of Saturday's game between the Sky and the Indiana Fever, Carter drilled a jumper to cut Indiana's lead to 4 points. Then, as the Fever were setting up to in-bound the ball, Carter appeared to call Clark a "bitch" then slammed into her — knocking the No. 1 overall pick to the ground.
Referees initially called Carter for an off-ball common foul, but the WNBA upgraded it to a flagrant 1 the next morning.
While Carter herself has shown no remorse for her actions, Witherspoon condemned the hard foul in a statement released Monday.
"Physical play, intensity, and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball. Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game," Weatherspoon said.
"She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.
So far, it's hard to argue that Carter learned anything from this incident and the subsequent blowback. The 25-year-old guard refused to answer any questions about the dirty play after the game and has since doubled down on her actions on social media.

Witherspoon continued: "As a team, we will grow together and continue to work hard to display strong leadership and set a positive example for our competitors, fans, and partners."
Indiana ultimately pulled out the win Saturday, 71-70. The Fever and Sky will meet again on Sunday, June 16.
