Shannon Sharpe, Chad Ochocinco Sound Off On Cam Newton Fight: No One Would Disrespect Mannings Like That
In the aftermath of the viral brawl at a 7-on-7 tournament, Shannon Sharpe and Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson are heated over the treatment of former NFL MVP Cam Newton.
Video showed Newton fighting off half a dozen men at Sunday's We Ball Sports event, and one of them even took a sucker punch at him in the midst of the chaos. On the latest episode of their Nightcap podcast, Sharpe and Johnson were upset about the "disrespect" shown toward Cam Newton in his own community.

"Y’all think that’s cute [to tell Newton he’s trash]. It’s not," Sharpe said. "It’s really embarrassing that somebody takes time out of their day… and try to give back and you’re disrespectful, ungrateful.
"Cam is way better than me because I don’t have patience for my own kids disrespecting me. I’ll be damned if I’m going to let somebody else’s kid disrespect me."
Newton’s C1N program participated in the tournament, which included under-15 and under-18 teams in Georgia and Alabama. The men who fought with him were part of TopShelf Performance (TSP) — a youth football club based in Atlanta.
"Knowing Cam like I do…. he’s not going to allow this to bother him," Johnson said.
"When you have someone like Cam Newton giving players an opportunity to display themselves at these 7-on-7 camps, you’re supposed to be taking advantage of these situations. Many times I’ve seen players, coaches and parents disrespect Cam Newton at these camps."
Sharpe agreed — adding that this incident isn't the first time players and parents have disrespected Cam at community events. He also noted Newton seems to be the only former player this sort of thing regularly happens to.
"Peyton and Eli [Manning] have been having a camp for 20-something years," Sharpe added. "You ain’t never seen no kids being disrespectful to Peyton and Eli."
Newton and everyone involved in the altercation were removed from the tournament.
But Was Cam Newton Disrespectful, Too?
Shannon and Chad might have a point. But new information from Fox News Digital's Scott Thompson tells a different story.
TSP defeated Newton’s C1N in a "heated game," and there was a lot of trash talk between the under-18 teams, according to We Ball Sports co-founder Nehemiah Mitchell.
And apparently, there's some history between the brawlers. TSP coaches TJ and Steph Brown used to coach in Newton's C1N program, but they split to form their own club after a falling out. TJ and Steph told Fox News that interactions with the former NFL QB have been tense ever since. And they claim Cam was heckling them throughout the tournament.
"It’s probably three minutes into the game, he’s sitting up top with all his kids around him under a tent yelling down on us," TJ said. "‘Hey, I know that play. That’s my stuff. I taught y’all everything y’all know. I’m y’all daddy. I made y’all. I’m the reason for everything y’all got going on.’ He’s just yelling all this stuff."
Steph went to confront Newton after their game, which is when things began to escalate. TJ was walking a staircase when video shows Newton grabbing Steph by his jacket after they were face-to-face trading words. TJ jumped in and threw a punch.
"If you’re walking up a flight of stairs, and you see a 6’6" guy grab your little brother trying to throw him down some stairs, you’re going to intervene," TJ said. "It doesn’t matter who you are, rather it be a punch, rather it be a push, rather it be grabbing him. You’re going to do something. So, at that point, with Cam putting his hands on another grown man, something is going to come behind that.
"If you ask anybody about me, I’m not confrontational, I’m not loud, I don’t get mad at people, I don’t argue with people, I don’t fight, I don’t do none of that crazy stuff. That’s not me."
Cam has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
