Rome Odunze Knows He'd Completely Botch An Emergency Plane Landing: 'All Souls Have Perished'
If you ever find yourself on a flight in which Rome Odunze has to make an emergency landing, prepare to meet your Maker.
The Washington Huskies wide receiver and highly-touted NFL prospect had an excellent career in Seattle. During his senior season, he regularly made defenders look foolish on his way to totaling 92 receptions, 1,640 yards, and 13 touchdowns. Except for Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., he’s the best receiver to come out of this class.
He’s the type of guy who wants the outcome of the game in his hands. When Washington did that last season, good things usually happened.
However, he knows full well that his football skills would be utterly useless if he had to be an emergency pilot.
At the NFL Combine, a reporter randomly asked Odunze if he felt confident that he could land a plane if he absolutely had to.
I can’t tell you what, if anything, this has to do with becoming an NFL-level receiver. But Odunze seemed incredibly unphased by the question and gave a brutally honest (yet slightly concerning) response.
"Absolutely not. We are going down, all souls have perished," Odunze said, which sent the reporters into a fit of laughter.
Welp, at least he’s honest about his abilities.
I guess if it came down to me or Odunze making a landing, I’d have to do it. After all, how hard can it be?
But seriously, this is the type of answer that could help NFL teams have more confidence in you. Not only was he candid, he was funny, and thought quickly on his feet. That might not tell evaluators how good your route-running or catching ability is, but it still leaves a good impression.
Except, of course, if he's ever needed to save lives on an airplane. Let’s hope no one is ever forced to put their lives in Odunze’s hands 30,000 feet in the air.
