Rickie Fowler Had A Heated Exchange With A Fan At The Players Championship
Rickie Fowler had a heated exchange with a fan at the tee box on the 16th hole at The Players Championship on Saturday.
Fowler, who isn't known for his temper, immediately went after the fan after his tee shot. Apparently, his caddie, Ricky Romano, had told the fan to put his phone on silent multiple times. The guy ignored the warning and didn't silence his phone.
It's hard to tell from the video if the phone went off or if the fan said something during Fowler's swing. Whatever happened, Fowler heard it, and he didn't like it. This caused him to address the fan directly.
As soon as he finishes his swing, Fowler looks over to the crowd, takes a few steps towards the fans and points while yelling, "You! What are you doing?!"
Fans On Social Media Had Rickie Fowler's Back
Hand up, I've never understood the whole silence when a golfer is taking a swing. Fans make noise at every other major sport. That said, you know that's what is expected from you as a fan when you attend a golf event.
This particular fan was also given some extra warnings ahead of time. A lot of fans reacting on social media had Fowler's back, with several pointing out that this kind of reaction isn't in Fowler's nature.
To be fair to the fan on the receiving end of Fowler's frustrations, he hasn't been playing well during this tournament and is way down near the bottom of the leaderboard.
Had he been playing better at the time, who knows? Maybe he lets whatever the fan did slide. As it stands, however, Fowler finished up the round at +4, which left him at the time at three over par for the tournament.
Fowler was not exactly in contention heading into Sunday's play.
