RGIII, Emmanuel Acho Call Out Fever's Caitlin Clark For Lack of Fourth-Quarter Shots
The final moments of Sunday's game between Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever and Angel Reese's Chicago Sky sparked a conversation about Clark's play.
Caitlin Clark had a solid outing with 17 points and a whopping 13 assists. However, in the fourth quarter, Clark seemingly took a step back from scoring, and the Chicago Sky completed a comeback to win, 88-87.
At one point in the third, the Fever held a 20-plus point lead.
Former ESPN commentator and NFL player Robert Griffin III reacted after the game, posting on X that Caitlin Clark should have been more selfish in the fourth quarter and taken the final shot.
RGIII shared a photo of Clark with the accompanying caption: "Caitlin Clark should have taken the last shot. That’s why you have her. For moments like that. Period."
Griffin wasn't the only person to speak up and call for more Caitlin Clark.
FS1's Emmanuel Acho stated that Clark needed to be a bigger factor in Sunday's game's closing moments.
"Caitlin Clark has to start being a lot more selfish," Acho posted. "Clark has to realize that her shooting a contested shot is more productive than her teammate shooting an uncontested shot. The 'right basketball play' on paper, ain’t always the right one in real life. Cc: Dame Lillard."
After the game, Clark answered a question about needing to take more shots late in the game. She supported providing her teammates with more opportunities in those late moments.
"I mean, sure, you can wish it. I’m sure there was an opportunity or two for me to probably attempt another shot there at the end, but I trust my teammates," Clark said. "I’m gonna give them the ball every time."
Clark's 13 assists against the Sky set a single-game franchise record for Indiana. Clark's unofficial rival, Angel Reese, also played a career game, scoring 25 points and securing 16 rebounds for Chicago.
The lack of shot attempts from Clark in the final two minutes was very obvious. With the game tied or facing a three-point deficit, the attention naturally turned to Clark during Indiana's offensive sequences, but the phenom wasn't heavily featured.
Fever players Kristy Wallace and Aliyah Boston hoisted more shot attempts in the closing moments than Clark. Chicago closed out the game on a 20-7 run. Sunday's box office matchup featured plenty of flare-ups from both teams, including some early chirping between Reese and NaLyssa Smith.
Clark's facilitating led to some strong performances from other Fever starters. Clark connected with Kelsey Mitchell several times, initiating more offense from deep. Mitchell finished shooting 5 of 10 from 3 (team-high 24 points).
Chicago's win slowed the surging Fever team, snapping Indy's four-game win streak. The Fever still holds a season-series advantage over the Sky, having won the last two matchups.
