Refs Made Correct Call At End Of Iowa/UConn Game, Slowed Down Video Proves
The refs made the correct call at the end of the Iowa/UConn game, and fans shouldn't be afraid to say it.
Fans online are currently outraged because they feel the showdown between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark was decided by the refs on a call that was either bad or shouldn't have happened.
Huskies player Aaliyah Edwards was whistled for an offensive foul in the closing seconds for an illegal screen on Gabby Marshall.
The ball returned to Iowa with the Hawkeyes up 70-69, and a free throw from Caitlin Clark pushed it to 71-69 as the final score. The outrage online is incredible.
However, it's time for people to take a breath and realize the refs got it right.
Refs made the correct call at end of Iowa/UConn game.
While fans with access to the internet might be outraged, the video actually is clear as day that Edwards 100% committed a foul. A slowed down video going viral on X clearly shows she wasn't set as a screened when contact was made with Marshall.
You can watch the video below, and I think you'll come to the same conclusion other rational fans are.
Now, some fans might argue that whether it's a foul or not, the refs should just eat their whistles at that point in the game. They might argue that you can't have a game end on an illegal screen call. That's just simply not true.
The rules don't change depending on how much time is left in the game. The rules are the rules. A screener has to be set. A player setting a screen can't be moving.
It's really that simple, and Edwards was clearly moving when she made contact with Gabby Marshall. What are we even talking about? Is the argument people really want to make that illegal screens should be allowed after a certain point in the game?
Or, are people just upset that Iowa and Caitlin Clark advanced when it looked like UConn had the chance to knock them out? I don't get it, but at least I know I'm not the only one who has come to the conclusion that the call was correct.
Do you think it was correctly called as an offensive foul or did the refs get it wrong? Let me know at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
