Rays and Jays Give Us Second Bench-Clearing Of The Young MLB Season

The MLB season is young — we haven't even made it through the first full weekend yet — and we've already had our second good old-fashioned bench-clearing, this time courtesy of the Tampa Bay Rays — just days removed from unveiling a wild card banner — and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Oooooooohhhhh… you can call ‘em "Rays," or you can call ’em "Jays"…

You can also call them "quick to anger" because it didn't take too much for this one to go off like a powder keg.

The teams split the first two games of the series and on Saturday, things got a little testy in the seventh inning when Tampa Bay's José Caballero sent a bunt down the third base line. The throw from Toronto's Justin Turner went wide of the mark at first base.

This gave Caballero time to ignite the jets and wheel his way past second base toward third.

He was thrown out pretty easily, but went through the base and bumped into Blue Jays pitcher Génesis Cabrera.

A few words were exchanged and then it was on.

Who knows what was said or why Cabrera got so bent out of shape (although I think we'd be safe to assume it was the error or the fact that the Blue Jays were losing), but he seems to have snapped.

That was quite the shot he got in on Caballero.

Cabrera was sent to the showers, and the Rays went on to win the game, 5-1.

This incident came just hours after an incident at second base between the Brewers Rhys Hoskins and Mets Jeff McNeil led to benches clearing on Friday.

Things are just getting started this season. Some teams still have 160 games left to play. If guys are this quick to anger three days into the season, imagine how surly everyone is going to be in August.
