Rangers Matt Rempe Works On His Fighting With One Of The Best In The Biz, Georges Laraque
Few NHL rookies have made such an impact with their fists the way that New York Rangers rookie Matt Rempe did this past season.
The gargantuan 22-year-old proved to be a solid fourth-liner but it was when he dropped the gloves that got him the most attention. He squared off with some of the best pugilists in the game including the Islanders' Matt Martin, the Flyers' Nicolas Deslauriers, and Maple Leafs' tough guy Ryan Reaves.
So, what is on Rempe's to-do list this summer? How about hooking up with one of the best fighters in recent memory to get some pointers?
A video has been making the rounds of Rempe getting some tips from former NHLer Georges Laraque.
That's pretty awesome. If you remember Georges Laraque, you'll recall that he was one of the best fighters of his era.
However, is that the thing that Rempe needs to work on?
I think we saw from 17 games he played in the regular season and 11 in the playoffs that he can throw 'em. In that stretch, he registered only 3 points in both the regular season and playoffs combined.
Even as a fourth liner, the Rangers will want a little more upside to Rempe's game. I mean, with his 6-foot-7 frame, if he gets to a point where they can park him in front of the net on power plays to pick up garbage, that'd help him pot a few.
But, on the other hand, if you got a call and someone said, "Hey, want to come out and throw some uppercuts with Georges Laraque?" we'd all immediately ask when and where because no one is turning down that opportunity.
We'll see how Rempe looks when he drops the gloves next season — which shouldn't take long if his first NHL stint was any indicator — because I'm sure Laraque helped him develop one dozy of an uppercut.
