Eagles Break A.J. Brown Contract Extension Right Before NFL Draft, Which Is A Great Troll
Apparently, the Philadelphia Eagles have a thing for making A.J. Brown news during the first round of the NFL Draft. Two years ago, during the 2022 NFL Draft, the Eagles traded for the star receiver from the Tennessee Titans.
This year, just minutes before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, news broke that the team signed Brown to a massive contract extension. There were rumors that Brown might be traded again during the NFL Draft, this time with the Eagles shipping him out of town.
But, that's not happening. Brown stays in Philadelphia with a $96 million contract extension, according to multiple reports.
The timing of this signing is absolutely hilarious. Surely, the Eagles could have announced this on another day. Instead, they elected to have the news break right before the NFL Draft. I say: "Bravo, Eagles."
Brown was a Pro Bowler in Tennessee but has flourished with the Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts. In each of his two seasons in Philadelphia, Brown was named NFL Second-Team All-Pro.
He has nearly 3,000 yards receiving over the past two seasons and 18 touchdowns. He's one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, there's no question about that.
The real question is the Eagles' salary cap situation. They've now committed a TON of money to Hurts, Brown, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith. Smith received a $75 million extension earlier this month.
They lost several key defensive players after their Super Bowl loss, and it greatly affected them last season when they limped to a 1-5 regular season finish and an upset loss in the Wild Card round to Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But, that's a problem for another day. For now, the Eagles have locked in their three best offensive players for at least the next three seasons.
