PGA Tour Player Grayson Murray Committed Suicide, According To Parents
On Saturday, the incredibly tragic news came down that Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner who captured the Sony Open title earlier this year, had died at the age of 30.
Murray had dealt with issues around depression, anxiety and addiction throughout his adult life. According to a statement from his parents, Murray committed suicide some time after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge during Friday's second round.
"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare," the statement from Eric and Terry Murray read.
"We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."
FULL STATEMENT:
Since Murray's death, the golf world has been mourning the loss. Many sent tributes on social media, as covered on Saturday by OutKick's Matt Reigle.
The timing of Murray's death seemed at odds with the idea that he had begun to turn his life around. In January, he reported that he was eight months sober. He had a fiancée, and he had found Jesus Christ, according to close friend and fellow PGA Tour player Webb Simpson.
"Grayson put great people around him. His fiancee, Christiana, seems like a great woman," Simpson said. "He has really explored his faith over the years. It seemed like the last six months to eight months, he had really started committing his life to Christ and trying to honor Christ with his life."
Rest in peace, Grayson Murray.
