Person Killed By Shuttle Bus Outside Gates Of PGA Championship, Second Round Delayed
A pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus near Valhalla Golf Club, site of this week's PGA Championship, delaying the start of Friday's second round of the major championship.
According to Fox 19, an unnamed man was reportedly crossing a road near the gates of the venue when he was hit by the bus "in the compulsory center land dedicated for buses." He died before he was taken to a hospital.
The tragedy caused serious traffic jams in all directions making it an issue for all players in the tournament field to get on the property. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was in the middle of the mess, to put it mildly, as he was put in handcuffs and detained in the back of a police car.
According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the situation with Scheffler unfold, said Scheffler attempted to drive past a police officer to enter Valhalla. Scheffler eventually stopped his vehicle, the officer began screaming at him to get out of the vehicle and after exiting, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car before putting him in handcuffs and detaining him in the back seat of a police car.
Shortly after the incident, Darlington jumped on SportsCenter and shared what he witnessed as he did see the entire situation unfold.
"Scottie Scheffler tried to enter Valhalla Golf Club by a side media, to which point a police officer instructed him to stop," Darlington explained. "Scheffler attempted to continue to go, the police officer then attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped the vehicle as he turned into Valhalla Golf Club at the entrance about 10-20 yards from where the police officer first told him to stop."
"At that point, the police officer instructed Scheffler to get out of the car. There was probably 20-30 seconds where Scheffler sat in the car and did not move. He rolled down the window, and when he did roll down the window, the police officer grabbed (Scheffler's) arm and started pulling at it," Darlington said describing the officer approaching Scheffler's car.
"I believe he reached inside, opened the car door, pulled Scheffler out, immediately placed him in handcuffs at which point Scottie Scheffler seeing me behind him said ‘can you help.’"
"The police officer instructed me to step back, I told them I was a member of the media. A police officer turned to me and said ‘there’s nothing you can do, Scottie Scheffler is going to jail.'"
The second round of the PGA Championship is set to begin at 8:35 AM ET.
