Pelican Steals The Show At Oracle Park During Giants-Reds Game
A pelican helped itself to a baseball game at Oracle Park on Saturday.
During the fifth inning of the San Francisco Giants' 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, a brown pelican swooped in and made himself at home in the outfield. There, it had a front row seat to watch Giants' outfielder Heliot Ramos making a diving catch on a Will Benson pop fly.
That's when Giants announcer Dave Flemming decided to have a little fun with it.
"Benson hits it toward the pelican. A pop-up, shallow left, and it’s going to be caught by Ramos. Sprinting in, tumbling over, he makes a catch. All the while, the pelican just sitting there unimpressed," said Flemming. "Here she goes, taking off, flying low right by Tyler Fitzgerald. Up over the bleachers, up over the garden, circling back around, still flying over the field, now up over the left field bleachers by the Coke bottle and turning back."
Not to be outdone, the Fox broadcast joined in on the pelican-talk, too.
"That was a brilliant, brilliant effort and that round of applause you’re hearing is because they put that bird on the video board. It’s a video bird," Jason Benetti said. "Out here in California, anybody can become a star."
After the game, Giants pitcher Mason Black — who was on the mound when the pelican made his way onto the field — seemed amused.
"I didn't really think too much of it," Black said. "I didn't know what the protocol was. Are we going to get that thing off the field, or just let it hang out? So it was funny."
And, of course, San Francisco's social media team capitalized.
Hey, 162 games is a long season — sometimes you have to make your own fun.
