Patriots Rookie Javon Baker Gives Savage, And Insensitive, Quote: 'I Make People In Wheelchairs Stand Up'
The New England Patriots might have drafted the most confident incoming rookie in the form of Javon Baker, but he also could work on his interview skills.
With the 110th pick (fourth round) of the draft, the Patriots chose the 22-year-old wide receiver from the UCF Golden Knights. He’s the second wide receiver along with Washington Huskies standout Ja'Lynn Polk that will call Foxborough his first NFL home in the fall. The Patriots were wise to invest so heavily in wide receiver talent, since they currently have very little at that spot.
Baker spent two years with UCF after transferring from Alabama, appearing in 27 games, and catching 108 passes for 1,935 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s a playmaker who can add some juice to New England’s wide receiver group. Baker has been described as "an explosive wide receiver who offers serious big-play potential as well as some of the best body control in the draft."
But it’s his self-belief that’s his most notable trait. After getting drafted, a reporter asked Baker in a video conference to describe his play style.
In response, Baker gave a brash quote that he might want back.
"Come to the stadium and bring y’all popcorn," Baker said. "That’s all I can tell y’all. Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up."
He’s not kidding about being an electric player. His tape from his days in UCF backs up that description.
But at the same time, you've got to be more aware of your words, especially in an introductory press conference. I'm all for being confident, he just could have left handicapped people out of his quote.
