Orioles' Adley Rutschman Face-Plants In The Dirt, Bloodies Nose Against Yankees

Star Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman suffered an embarrassing folly during Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees.

Standing up at second base in the first inning with Ryan Mountcastle at first, Rustchman teased a steal for third until Yanks starter Nestor Cortes tossed the ball back for a pick-off attempt.

Rustchman retreated but unintentionally face-planted against the dirt at Yankee Stadium to return to second safely.

What appeared to be a routine sequence ended with the 26-year-old holding his bloody nose and getting patched up before Cortes' next pitch. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde and head athletic trainer Brian Ebel let Rutschman stay in the game.

"It looks like his nose might've crashed into the dirt," the broadcast mentioned.

The broadcast also called back to Derrick White of the Boston Celtics suffering a similar folly during the NBA Championship-clinching Game 5 win on Monday. White's face crashed into the hardwood after clashing with a Mavericks player, leading to a chipped tooth for White.

Players in the Orioles' dugout couldn't contain their laughter as the replay of Rustchman's trip played.

The play might not make it to the highlight reel on Tuesday, but it could end up on the Not-Top-10 list.

The AL East battle for the top of the division rages on between the Orioles (47-24) and Yankees (50-24). Baltimore is just 1.5 games behind the Yankees' division lead.

On Wednesday, the Bronx Bombers welcomed back 2023 AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole for Game 3 of the series.
