Novak Djokovic Hit In The Head With A Water Bottle At Italian Open
Novak Djokovic won a match in the Italian Open in Rome, Italy, and then got injured in one of the most unpredictable ways possible.
The Serbian legend had taken a month off of playing tennis, and came back on the court for this tournament. After beating Frenchman Corentin Moutet in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) in the Round of 64, he went to sign autographs for some of the fans in attendance.
As he went to sign his second piece of memorabilia, a water bottle (which looked to be made of aluminum) fell from the stands and landed directly on his head. He crumpled to the ground in pain, and began bleeding as well. Security took him away from the scene and doctors gave him medical attention.
It’s unclear if the bottle was dropped on purpose, and no one in the video owned up to doing it. Fortunately, he will have a full day to recover before facing No. 29 seed Alejandro Tabilo in the third round on Sunday.
ESPN broadcaster and tennis legend John McEnroe told Forbes by text that he was disgusted with what happened.
"This is downright despicable and underscores how accessible tennis players are generally," ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe said by text. "Scary. Let’s hope Novak is OK."
McEnroe's theory that this was done on purpose was quickly debunked. The tournament organizers released video showing that it accidentally fell from a fan's backpack and it was completely unintentional.
Hopefully the G.O.A.T. is okay and he won’t have to withdraw from further matches at the tournament.
