NFL Suspends Steelers DB Cameron Sutton 8 Games Following Domestic Violence Incident
In early March, Florida police issued an arrest warrant for Detroit Lions defensive back Cameron Sutton. For weeks, they could not locate the NFL defensive back, but he eventually turned himself in to the authorities.
Sutton was wanted on a domestic battery by strangulation charge stemming from an incident with his girlfriend, with whom he has three children.
During the search for Sutton, the Lions released the veteran cornerback, who they signed prior to last season to a three-year contract after he spent his first six seasons in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers elected to bring Sutton back in at a substantially lowered cost thanks to his legal issues. However, the team was aware that the NFL was likely to hand down discipline to Sutton.
The league did just that Monday, announcing an eight-game suspension for Sutton, citing that he violated the NFL's personal conduct policy. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first with the news.
Schefter reported that Sutton's suspension is without pay and the cornerback does not plan to appeal. He will miss the first eight games of the 2024-25 NFL season.
The Tampa Bay Times acquired a copy of the affidavit following Sutton's arrest, and the details of the incident do not paint a good picture of Sutton.
"Sutton and a woman got into an argument at about 4:45 a.m. on March 7… During the argument, Sutton picked up the woman and slammed her into a wall, then bit her on the neck, leaving a quarter-sized abrasion that bled," according to the Tampa Bay Times report of the affidavit.
"Sutton then grabbed the woman by the face and neck and choked her, causing her to briefly lose consciousness. The altercation continued into the living room of the home, where Sutton held down the woman by her hair and struck her twice with his fist, causing a knot to form on the woman’s forehead."
Sutton will be eligible for reinstatement prior to the Steelers following their Week 8 Monday Night Football contest against the New York Giants.
Pittsburgh has its bye during Week 9, meaning the earliest that Sutton would be able to play for the team would be a Week 10 matchup in Washington against the Commanders.
