NFL GM Offers Dumbest Possible Explanation For Teams Not Hiring Mike Vrabel
Mike Vrabel won't be an NFL head coach in 2024. But apparently, teams' lack of interest in the former Tennessee Titans coach has nothing to do with his knowledge of the game, his leadership skills or even his track record.
The guy is simply too yoked to be a head coach.
One NFL general manager told The Athletic's Diana Russini that Vrabel's physical size may have deterred front offices from bringing him on board. She revealed this very stupid explanation on The Athletic Football Show podcast on Monday.
Russini outlined what the general manager told her, saying: "He's a very large human being. And can be very intimidating to people in an organization that are going to be part of these decisions. And that is a factor."
Clearly thinking he was joking, Russini laughed at the idea that Vrabel's build had anything to do with the hiring process. But the GM doubled down.
"I said, 'Stop, that's not something that's real. Who cares what someone physically looks like?'" Russini said. "And he said, 'I'm just telling you, I've been in rooms and somebody's physical presence can make a difference.'"
Unreal. Who knew GMs were such puny little b-tches?
Mike Vrabel — Absolute Unit — Strikes Fear In The Hearts Of General Managers
Vrabel played 14 seasons in the NFL, and according to Pro Football Reference, he was 6-foot-4, 261 pounds during his playing career.
Terrifying for NFL executives. Hilarious, though, for fans on social media.
Mike Vrabel coached the Titans for six seasons before getting fired Jan. 9 after two consecutive losing seasons.
But during his tenure in Nashville, he also boasted three playoff appearances, an AFC title game and a Coach of the Year award. So it was surprising he didn't draw more interest from any of the eight teams with head coaching vacancies.
Now we know why: He's just too big and scary.
Head on a swivel, Dan Campbell.
