NFL Debunks Josh Jacobs' Claim That Eagles, Packers Can't Wear Green During Brazil Game
Earlier this week, Josh Jacobs claimed the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers were warned not to wear green during their Week 1 game in Brazil. But the NFL says that's just not true.
The two teams will face off on Sept. 6 in São Paulo, Brazil — the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in South America. During an appearance on the Green Light podcast with Chris Long, Jacobs said the teams were told they could not wear green because it may not be safe.
"They said, I guess, something to do with the gangs and stuff," said Jacobs. "They said we not going to Rio. They told us, they was like, man, this one of those places where they probably won’t let us leave the hotel… They probably gonna have armored vehicles following us around. I said, ‘Bro, why are we out here? Why are we here?'"
But NFL chief spokesman Brian McCarthy told Front Office Sports that Jacobs' claims about both colors and an unsafe environment are unfounded.
"No, neither of these items are true," McCarthy said. "One of the host stadium’s rival soccer clubs wears green, but the league did not say players could not wear green. That is false. Multiple league officials from across the league have made multiple planning trips. As with any international game, we have comprehensive security plans in place coordinated with local officials. Again, there was no guidance provided to the clubs as suggested here."
Jacobs responded by saying he was "misinformed."
"Sorry Brazil see you soon," he wrote on his Instagram story.
According to a community of Eagles fans on X, the basis of Jacobs' misinformation boils down to soccer rivalries. Arena Corinthians — where the game will be played — is home to Corinthians, a red-wearing club whose mortal enemies of Palmeiras wear green. There is a history of violence between the two fan bases.
So if you're a fan traveling to the game, maybe just steer clear of Palmeiras T-shirts.
