New York Mets Unveil New City Connect Uniforms And I'm A Fan

The New York Mets knocked it out of the park with their new City Connect uniform design - pun very much intended.

After two years of planning, the Mets revealed a uniform design that boasts a purple and silver color scheme. The team will wear these new threads during every home game played on a Saturday for the rest of the year.

While you may be thinking that this is an unwise move that’s too far off the typical orange and blue design, that’s actually the point. The idea behind the "City Connect" designs is not to be traditional and predictable. The goal is to make these uniforms (unsurprisingly) connect with the culture of the city the team plays in.

Chief marketing officer Andy Goldberg understood this objective perfectly.

"It’s all about connecting to New York," Goldberg said. "A lot of detail, a lot of focus on this idea that yeah, it’s not orange and blue by design. It’s meant to connect to New York. It’s meant to not just be an alternate Mets uniform. It’s our City Connect. It is how Met fans can represent across the world."

This is the second time in recent years when the Mets ownership team listened to its players when considering implementing a new uniform design. Not only did nearly every player on the roster love these uniforms, but in 2021, team owner Steve Cohen decided to bring back the team’s black uniforms, largely because the players wanted him to.

Details of the uniform make this crack my top 5….Barely.

There are several details within this design that really drive home the effort to connect to the city.

As you noticed, there’s a fair amount of purple in the threads. This is an homage to the 7-Line, a subway route that runs from times square to Queens. Furthermore, the gray represents the "Concrete Jungle" that is New York City.

But the best detail is the hat, which features a profile of the framework for the Queensboro bridge. Throw that around the iconic log, and you’ve got yourselves a winner.

After the Philadelphia Phillies dropped their City Connect threads earlier this month, I did a rankings piece of the top five uniforms released to date. I’m going to put these as my new No. 5 (sorry, Chicago White Sox), and not higher, because I would have liked to see more purple in the design.

So that means the updated rankings are:

  1. Washington Nationals
  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Seattle Mariners
  4. Boston Red Sox
  5. New York Mets

The first time the Mets will get to wear these jerseys will be on April 27 against the St. Louis Cardinals. I can’t wait to see them in action.
