NBA Unveils Actually Cool LED Courts For All-Star Weekend
Basketball fans who've advocated for the NBA to try glass digital courts over traditional hardwood, it's your lucky day.
Announced Monday, the league will introduce a full-LED screen to the All-Star Weekend events, including the NBA's dunk contest, celebrity game skills challenge and three-point shootout between Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry and (WNBA) New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu.
The Association is brightening up its All-Star Weekend with an ingenious addition to the events: a fully digital LED court.
Basic uses of the new digital court made by ASB Glassfloor will include changing designs and color schemes during the games. Real-time stats and replays will be displayed on the court, attempting to enhance the appeal of a Jumbotron and making it a part of the play.
Will it also serve as a major distraction in the events?
NBA All-Star Weekend festivities begin Feb. 16.
The court, however, will not be used for the main All-Star Game, hosted at the Indiana Pacers' home court, Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
"With the All-Star Game being the marquee event across the weekend, I think if we have the ability in the future to do it, I think that we would," commented Carlton Myers, head of the league's live production and entertainment.
It's a brazen addition to the live events. Adding flare to the court decor in real-time with the digital floor should only amp up the entertainment factor. Will this digital experiment cascade into a splash innovation for the sporting entertainment world, equivalent to the impact of the Las Vegas Sphere?
The NBA's All-Star Weekend's future already looks brighter than the NFL's Pro Bowl Games from this past weekend.
Just like the OutKick Hot Mic guys, I did not watch that piece of garbage and am better for it.
