Fans Unhappy After Bucks Social Media Says ‘Nobody Really Cares’ What Happened In Regular Season
The Milwaukee Bucks social media team thought it was posting a cool playoff hype video. Instead, it accidentally irked a bunch of fans and sparked a debate about the importance of the NBA regular season.
Ahead of the Bucks' Game 1 match-up against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, the team posted a highlight reel with a voiceover to pump up fans for the postseason. The caption read: "What happened in 82 games, nobody really cares. It's what you do now."
That wording didn't exactly sit well with Bucks faithful — who were left wondering, If the regular season doesn't matter, why am I spending so much money on tickets?
OK, OK, so the message is obvious: It doesn't matter how good you were in the regular season if you can't win in the playoffs. That's something Milwaukee fans know all too well after the Bucks finished first in the Eastern Conference last season only to get booted in the first round by the 8th-seeded Miami Heat.
But saying the regular season doesn't matter is probably not the best move for an organization in the top-10 for the NBA's most expensive tickets. And it's especially tone-deaf considering the league just posted its lowest-rated regular season in network TV history and has now lost all leverage in upcoming media rights negotiations.
Luckily for the Bucks' social media staffers, though, the team did its job to distract fans from the ill-advised hype video.
Even with superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined, the Bucks curb-stomped the Pacers in Game 1, 109-94. Damian Lillard stole the show early with a team-high 35 points, and Milwaukee held Indiana's league-best offense to its lowest first-half point total of the season.
Game 2 tips off Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. EST.
