Michael Kay Loses It Over SNY Promo Playing During His Radio Show
The "Subway Series" between the New York Mets and New York Yankees is in the midst of its latest installation, with the Mets capturing victory in game one of the two-game series on Tuesday night.
But the rivalry on the field is apparently not the only one. There's also one going on inside the broadcast booths, and Michael Kay – the Yankees play-by-play announcer for YES Network – wasn't about to lose to SNY – the network that broadcasts the Mets.
Especially not during his own radio show.
As his show was coming back from a commercial break on Wednesday, Kay heard a promo running for SNY that urged viewers to watch the "Subway Series" on SNY because they have the #1 booth in baseball.
Kay took great offense to that promo, especially the fact that it aired during his radio show.
"We appreciate every single one of the people that spend their money to advertise on the show," Kay says, innocently enough, before explaining that SNY is one of those advertisers.
"Their ad, which ran during the last break, [said] ‘Enjoy the Subway Series with the best booth in baseball.’ I mean, do you expect me to just take that lying down? I think our booth is the best booth in baseball," Kay said, starting to get animated.
He took aim at whomever made the decision to run that ad during his show, presumably someone who signs his paycheck.
"[They are] being completely clueless to run that on the Michael Kay Show," he said.
Both his co-hosts, Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg, pushed back on Kay because what else is a promo for SNY going to say? That they aren't the best booth in baseball?
But Kay's issue is less with the language and more with the fact that it ran during his show. Except, of course it does. Kay's show is one of the highest-rated programs on the radio station.
Thus, SNY is paying top dollar to have its ad run during the most-viewed program. And, of course, LaGreca admits that they're all fine with the top dollar part.
"You don't have a problem with us airing it because we like their money," LaGreca said.
The entire four-minute clip is worth watching:
I love it. Mets-Yankees is a great rivalry. Why not have SNY vs. YES as a secondary component?
