Michael Irvin, Steve Mariucci Can't Answer 'Breaking Bad'-Themed Trivia Question During Super Bowl Pregame
Did you know there’s a former football player who has the same name as a "Breaking Bad" character?
It’s okay if you didn’t, neither did I. And neither did two members of the NFL Network’s cast.
As part of the NFL Network's pregame coverage for Super Bowl LVIII, Rich Eisen asked Michael Irvin and Steve Mariucci (a former NFL coach), a rather simple trivia question. He wanted them to pick the name out of a list of four options that was both the name of a former Kansas City Chiefs player and a character in the wildly popular television series.
The options were: Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, Saul Goodman, and Gus Fring.
As the timer started ticking, Mariucci quickly let Irvin know he didn’t have a clue as to what the answer was (he apparently had never seen the show). So, instead of two minds working together, Irvin had to carry the weight of the team.
After much intense debating, the pair went with Jesse Pinkman, which is what I would have said. Walter White seems too obvious, I feel like I would have heard of Saul Goodman before, and Gus Fring sounds so ridiculous. That’s my deductive reasoning being put to good use.
But Irving and Mariucci came up short, and the correct answer was indeed the most obvious one: Walter White.
It’s true. White - the Chiefs tight end, not the fictional drug dealer in New Mexico - played five seasons for Kansas City from 1975-1979 and scored 16 touchdowns in his career. Apparently, Irvin knows who this guy is, but still chose to defer in a high-stakes situation.
It's a good thing these guys get paid for their football acumen, and not for their pop culture knowledge. They might not last long in the industry if that were the case.
