Michael Irvin Says Antonio Gates Was Robbed By HOF Committee
Michael Irvin thought Antonio Gates would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. It didn't work out that way.
When the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class was revealed at NFL Honors on Thursday, the legendary Chargers tight end got the snub.
But Irvin — a member of the 2007 HOF class — is encouraging Gates to be patient and stay positive.
"I didn't get in on the first ballot," the former Dallas Cowboys receiver said. "But, I promise you I got in on the third ballot and when I got there, and I got to that podium, straight joy was waiting on me. It didn't even matter that I didn't go in on the first ballot, once I got there, I just saw joy."
Gates retired in 2018 after 16 seasons — all with the Chargers. Over his career, he amassed 11,841 receiving yards, 955 catches and 116 total touchdowns. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler and a four-time First-Team All-Pro selection.
According to Pro Football Reference's Hall of Fame Monitor, only three tight ends (Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski, and Travis Kelce) have had more significant careers than Antonio Gates.
So, likely, a gold jacket is in his future. Maybe just not as soon as he — or Irvin — expected it.
"Don't let that rob you when your time comes," Irvin said. "Don't be so angry you didn't get in when you wanted it that when you do get it, you can't even appreciate it. Don't let them steal it from you twice."
