Michael Bublé Says He Was On Mushrooms At NHL All-Star Draft While Answering Question About Fantasy Hockey
The NHL held its All-Star Draft on Thursday night in Toronto, and believe it or not, the star of the show was crooner Michael Bublé.
Although, according to his post-draft presser he got an assist from some magic mushrooms.
The NHL is still using a 3-on-3 tournament format as it has for the last few years, however this year, they went back to picking teams fantasy draft-style instead of simply deciding teams based on divisions.
To help out with this, each of the four teams had a celebrity captain. That honor was held by comedian Will Arnett, singer Tate McCrae, popstar Justin Bieber (who also had a hand in designing the jerseys, and the aforementioned Bublé.
Now, I'm not sure if you watched any of the draft… but it was a little on the cringe side. I mean, for some reason, the league hasn't figured out that the majority of NHLers aren't exactly thrilled at the prospect of public speaking. So, that meant the celebrity captains had to pick up the slack, and dammit, if Bublé — a Vancouver Canucks super fan —didn't give it the old college try.
Bublé — or, Mikey Bubbles, as I liked to believe he'd be called if he was a Sopranos character — was clearly fired up. After the draft in which his team acquired all of the available Canucks, except the recently acquired Elias Lindholm, Bublé revealed that a pregame "dietary decision" may have led to him being a little excited.
And like a guy on mushrooms, he said this while answering a question about fantasy hockey.
Michael Bublé Talks Taking Mushrooms At NHL All-Star Draft
After defending himself for saying he was in first place in his fantasy league — which was questioned by hockey writer Matt Larkin who runs the league — Bublé talked about taking a detour through the Mushroom Kingdom, so to speak.
"My buddy told me this is just a microdose of mushrooms… and he lied. So, I'll be honest, I thought I was in Blades of Glory for most of the time that I was out there until it settled down and I realized, ‘Holy s--t, I’m at the NHL All-Star Game.'"
I've never done mushrooms. My experience with mushrooms only goes as far as sauteing some in a little olive oil, butter, and a splash of red wine then tossing on top of a steak. That's a one-way ticket to Flavortown, but it won't make the room melt or let you talk to God.
That is to say, I have no idea what Bublé was going through, but I can't imagine an ideal place to do 'shrooms is at center ice in the Scotiabank Arena with TV cameras zoomed in on you. That sounds like a recipe for what Phish fans would call a "freakout."
We'll see how Buble's team — which Team Hughes, with captains Quinn and Jack Hughes — fares on Saturday night, and if they do well, perhaps that "microdose" was the key.
