Mets Reliever Jake Diekman Rages Out By Tossing Dugout Cooler
New York Mets reliever Jake Diekman took his frustrations out on a poor cooler during Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Diekman blew a fuse in the dugout shortly after surrendering a two-run homer to David Fry in the fifth inning. Making matters worse is the 0-2 count Fry faced before the pinch hitter shot Diekman's four-seam fastball to right field — plunging the not-so-Amazin' Mets into a 7-4 deficit heading into the sixth inning. Fry's hit barely made the cut as a home run, traveling 334 ft., which would not count as a score in most ballparks.
The veteran pitcher joins a frustrated pitching staff headlined by Mets star Edwin Diaz.
Riding a rough streak heading into a weekend series against the Marlins, the team demoted Diaz (MLB's highest-paid closer) in favor of a relief-by-committee approach. The vet blew a four-run lead against Miami (arguably the worst team in baseball) on Saturday, 10-9. The loss capitalized on the Mets' lousy fortune to start the season. Mets fans watched as their pitching took a dismal step back on the day the offense showed up. Diaz signed a five-year, $102 million deal with the Mets in 2022. He suffered a notorious season-ending at the World Baseball Classic in 2023.
Over the weekend, fellow reliever Jorge Lopez lost his cool after a demoralizing loss and started banging on a trash can.
New York couldn't climb out of their fifth-inning hole on Tuesday, losing to the Guardians, 7-6. The Mets remain fourth in the NL East with a 21-27 record.
