Mets Reach Boiling Point As Pitcher Gets Ejected, Then Tosses Glove Into The Seats
The New York Mets are flailing heading into June after a tough series against the Dodgers this week. The series was capped off on Wednesday by a Mets pitcher frustratingly tossing his glove into the stands after getting ejected.
Finishing a three-game homestand at Citi Field, the Mets welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers and saw their frustrations peak in the eighth inning. Facing a 7-3 deficit, pitcher Jorge Lopez gave up a two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani. Then, facing Freddie Freeman in the next at-bat, Lopez began arguing over a check swing with the third-base official, leading to an ejection.
As he walked to the dugout, Lopez flung his glove into the crowd of fans, and it was ‘goodnight’ for Lopez.
After the game, Lopez was asked if he regretted the garish exit.
Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza tried to pardon his flare-up as an ‘in the moment’ reaction, but the pitcher showed no remorse, telling media after the game that he didn't regret the moment.
Lopez showed a bit of frustration through a choppy response.
Needless to say, Lopez was DFA'd shortly after the game, per SNY's Andy Martino. (Play stupid games; win stupid prizes).
It was an all-around demoralizing day for the Mets.
"Carlos Mendoza needs to be fired, this is a disgrace on and off the field," one fan commented on the video.
Slugger Pete Alonso exited the 10-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday after getting hit by a pitch. Though the MRI on Alonso came back clean, an overarching injury concern still hangs over the team. The club also announced on Wednesday that star closer Edwin Diaz, who was demoted earlier this month, was moved to the IL due to shoulder impingement.
The Dodgers (36-22) completed their sweep of the Mets (22-33) on Wednesday after a Tuesday doubleheader that was all L.A.
