Maryland Coordinator, Former Aggies HC Kevin Sumlin Arrested, Charged With DUI Over Weekend

Former Aggies head coach and Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence. Police pulled Sumlin over, and court records revealed that Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test.

Sumlin was arrested in Hillsborough County, around 1 a.m., traveling on U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Sumlin was released eight hours after his arrest. The Terps did not have a game scheduled this week (bye). A Maryland spokesperson released a statement on Sumlin's arrest.

"Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment."

Additional details note that Sumlin entered a not-guilty plea on Monday.

Sumlin joined the Terrapins in February. He was hired as Maryland's associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and tight ends coach. Sumlin's most notable tenure as coach was at College Station with Johnny Manziel, working as Texas A&M's head coach from 2012 to 2017. Sumlin went 51-26 as the Aggies' coach before Jimbo Fisher stepped in. He jumped from Houston to Texas A&M, then Arizona as a head coach until he landed a coaching gig in the USFL revival in 2022, leading the Houston Gamblers. The Gamblers finished 3-7 on the season.
