Marlins OF Dane Myers Breaks Ankle By Kicking Clubhouse Door During Tantrum

Miami Marlins outfielder Dane Myers is headed to the Injured List with a fractured ankle — an injury he sustained in one of the dumbest ways possible.

Myers told reporters on Sunday that he broke his left ankle when he kicked a clubhouse door in frustration after being ejected during a game against the Cincinnati Reds a day earlier.

"It’s tough (to control myself), but it’s something you gotta do as a pro," he said Sunday, via Bally Sports Florida. "I think that’s the last missing piece in my game, kind of being even-keeled, staying level-headed and not really letting the emotions take over and losing myself like I did."

The 28-year-old was ejected in the eighth inning on Saturday after disputing plate umpire Derek Thomas' ruling that he failed to check his swing on a 3-2 pitch. At the time, the Marlins had runners on first and second with one out. Myers wanted Thomas to get a second opinion on the checked swing from first base umpire Brennan Miller, but to no avail.

The ejection came after Myers' heated exchange with Thomas. Myers said he kicked a door in the visitors' clubhouse.

"I took a swipe at the door with my foot, and I didn't think I kicked it that hard, but I fractured my foot," Myers said.

Fortunately for Myers (and for the Marlins), there was no displacement, meaning he should not need surgery. But according to the Miami Herald's Craig Mish, he will likely be out six to eight weeks.

The injury interrupts an otherwise solid season from Myers. Through 40 games, he has a .265/.337/.422 slash line along with 14 RBI and four stolen bases in five attempts.

But the Marlins, overall, are struggling in 2024. At 33-63, Miami enters the All-Star Break in last place in the NL East — a whopping 29 games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies.
