Mack Brown Slams Coaches Using Scummy Recruiting Tactic Against Him

Mack Brown isn't overly pleased with rival coaches focusing on one thing with him:

The fact he's in his 70s.

Brown turns 73 a couple days before North Carolina's first game of the season. He's the oldest active coach in college football.

It's understandable why people might be using his age against him, but he's now returning fire in pretty blunt fashion.

Mack Brown calls out coaches using his age as a recruiting tactic.

Brown addressed the media during ACC Media Days, and he had a pretty simple message for any coach talking to recruits about the fact he's in his 70s.

Focus on yourself.

"Every coach recruiting against us says I’m going to quit. And six of them have been fired that said that already. So they ought to be worried about themselves," Brown told the media Thursday.

Talk your game, Mack. Talk your game. Using someone's age isn't surprising at all, but it is a bit scummy. It's the same way with coaches who constantly tell recruits other coaches are going to be fired in the near future.

Of course, recruiting is a dirty game, and the fact it's scummy hardly means coaches won't use it as a tactic. It's the nature of the beast. Trust nobody. Assume everyone is lying. Only trust the hand at the end of your sleeve.

However, if a coach is going to trash a guy for being in his 70s, then he better be doing it from a position of strength. Brown claims six of them have already been fired.

I won't speculate as to who the six might be, but the national champion coach clearly has a chip on his shoulder. Even at 73 years old, I think it's safe to say he has some fire in his belly.

Now, Brown will enter a new season without a certified star at QB for the first time in a few years. Judging from his aggressive tone and demeanor, he's ready to send a message. Let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
