Look Out Below! Mannequin Falls Near The Track During IndyCar Race
When IndyCar drivers participate in races, they need the track clear of any obstructions: people, debris, and mannequins.
While the occasional fan might want to act stupid and run across the track for cheap attention, and while trash may inadvertently blow on the track, the last one seems to be a given. After all, how would a mannequin possibly get placed on the track?
On Sunday in Birmingham, AL, we found out how.
During the 52nd lap of the Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix, the camera crew captured footage of a mannequin that was dangerously close to the track. Evidently, it had a name - "Georgina." She normally hangs by her hands from a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the track.
Drivers whizzed past at insane speeds, all doing their best to avoid hitting her. Unfortunately, Georgina did not escape unscathed, losing her wrist in the process.
Social media responded to one of the most unusual things you'll ever see at a motor sports race.
The female figurine is apparently not the only unorthodox decoration on or around the track. Back in 2016, AL.com wrote an article about how track owner George Barber goes to extraordinary lengths to make the track look unique:
"In George Barber's world, giant spiders and ants roam the landscape, along with dinosaurs and Bigfoot. A woman perpetually dangles by her hands from a bridge while drivers speed by unconcerned. A zombie emerges from a lake, and a tri-colored horse stands brightly upon a hill."
All of that is fine! The world could use someone who knows how to creatively construct sporting venues.
But for Pete’s sake, keep everything off the track. The drivers would sure appreciate it.
