Larry Fedora, Jeff Fisher Named Final Two USFL Head Coaches

All eight USFL head coaches have officially been revealed as the league gets set for its inaugural season.

FOX Sports' Colin Cowherd announced on The Herd with Colin Cowherd Thursday that Larry Fedora will be the head coach of the New Orleans Breakers, while Jeff Fisher returns to professional football to coach the Michigan Panthers.

Fedora and Fisher join the following group of USFL head coaches: Skip Holtz (Birmingham Stallions), Kirby Wilson (Pittsburgh Maulers), Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers), Mike Riley (New Jersey Generals), Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits) and Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars).

Both Fedora, 59, and Fisher, 63, add to the wealth of experience among the league's head coaches. Fedora has coaching experience dating back to 1986, notably serving as head coach at Southern Miss (2008-11) and North Carolina (2012-18). He amassed a 79-62 record with eight bowl game appearances.

His most recent stop came at Baylor, serving as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the 2020 season.

Fisher, meanwhile, is arguably the most accomplished head coach in the USFL. He joins the New Jersey Generals' Mike Riley and the Tampa Bay Bandits' Todd Haley as the only coaches to have been head coaches in the NFL.

Fisher is known for his time as the Oilers/Titans' head coach from 1995-2010. It was a very successful 16-season tenure for Fisher, as he guided the franchise to six playoff appearances and its only Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999-2000, a 23-16 loss to the Rams. Fisher is the franchise's all-time winningest head coach with a 142-120 record.

Fisher and Tennessee parted ways after the 2010-11 season. He got his next head coaching opportunity with the Rams (2012-16), going 31-45 with zero playoff appearances. He most recently served as an advisor at Tennessee State for the 2021 season.

The USFL will now look towards finalizing rosters, as the league will hold a player selection meeting on Feb. 21-22. Each team will field a roster of 38 players and seven practice squad members.

The New Jersey Generals and Birmingham Stallions will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 16 in the first game of the season. The game will be simulcasted on NBC and FOX. All games will be played in Birmingham, Alabama, with Protective Stadium hosting majority of the games.
