Jets O.C. Nathaniel Hackett Put On Notice After Team's Ambiguous Offseason Chats With Fellow O.C.
While fans are eager to watch Aaron Rodgers play in his second year with the New York Jets, no one is eager to watch another Jets offense commanded by offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
Despite losing Rodgers in Week 1, Hackett's work as O.C. caused a lot of headaches for the Jets' offense last season, giving fans flashbacks of Hackett's inability to coach the Denver Broncos competently.
After just one season, there are serious questions about bringing back Hackett. The Jets stuck it out by keeping the coordinator but showed a strong interest in bolstering their play-calling due to keeping Hackett.
What's the Jets' confidence in Hackett? Ridiculously low, it seems.
According to the New York Post, the Jets spoke with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith for an undisclosed role to potentially assist Hackett.
The unclear role raises serious uncertainty about the Jets' confidence in Hackett, especially after they finished 31st among NFL offenses last season, scoring only 22 total touchdowns.
Questions have loomed around Hackett since he was hired as Jets O.C., generally viewed as more of a wish list item to Aaron Rodgers than a quality hire by the team's brass.
Smith's background as an offensive coordinator, including a solid two-season stint with the Tennessee Titans, earned him serious O.C. consideration and eventually led to his landing with the Steelers. But before the Steelers hired Smith, the Jets came knocking on the coach's door.
New York is unwilling to take any risks with a slowed-down offense under Hackett, considering Rodgers' ability as a 40-year-old QB will begin to decline.
The clock is ticking for the new-look Jets to regain their status as possible Super Bowl contenders under Rodgers or disappoint their devoted fans yet again.
