Touching Gesture By NFL Good Guy: Jalen Hurts Covers Funeral Expenses For Late High School Linebacker
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts extended a helping hand to a Texas family that suffered a tragic loss last weekend.
Hurts reached out to the family of 18-year-old Jarvon Coles after the high school linebacker was gunned down at a house party in Humble, Texas. Hurts attended Channelview High School in Texas, which played against Coles' school, North Shore H.S. in Houston.
The Eagles QB helped cover Coles' funeral expenses and sent the family a video message commemorating the young footballer, which was played at the service.
Jarvon Coles' grandfather spoke about his late grandson's impact on the community, citing his 4.1 GPA when speaking of his distinctive persona.
Coles was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in what Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called a deliberate targeting by one or multiple shooters. The young football player had attended a house party with more than 50 people. Sheriff Gonzalez also described the scene as a drive-by shooting.
Amid the tragedy, Hurts' act of charity served as a bit of hope for the departed player's family. Aside from his elite play as a dual-threat QB, Hurts' leadership and compassion have been cited as a major strength of the ascending player.
Former NFL QB Peyton Manning previously complimented Hurts for his upstanding character on and off the football field.
"Jalen is a natural leader who cares about his job and the organization that he plays for," Manning wrote in a Time Magazine column dedicated to Hurts.
"The Eagles signed Jalen to a record-breaking contract extension this offseason, and he feels that accountability and responsibility to make them glad they made that investment."
Houston Mayor John Whitmire, alongside Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, announced March 16 as the official "Jarvon Coles Day" to keep the memory of the young Texas player strong.
Rest in Peace
