We’re Talkin’ 'Bout Practice: IndyCar Drivers Get Physical After Run-In During Practice In Detroit
The NTT IndyCar Series has moved on to Detroit after its marquee race — the Indianapolis 500 — and it didn't take long for things to get testy, specifically between drivers Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood during the weekend's second practice session on Saturday morning.
Ferrucci drives the No. 14 car for AJ Foyt Racing, while Kirkwood and Herta drive the No. 27 and No. 26 cars respectively for Andretti Global, and they were all out on the short, 1.6-mile Detroit street circuit late in the session.
With so many cars on such a short circuit, it can get slightly crowded. At one point, Ferrucci and Herta started to get a little feisty.
Then, Ferrucci had a run-in with Kirkwood (which you can see at the end of the following clip) and when both drivers pulled into the pits, Kirkwood went over to Ferrucci's pit box, only for the driver of the No. 14 to hop over the wall and grab him by the firesuit.
Maybe Ferrucci hadn't seen the replay at that point, but… Kyle Kirkwood didn't turn into him. Maybe there was a slight move left, but that looked to be because he was about to turn into the corner.
Man, now that's a practice session.
But, wait… there's more!
Ferrucci Is Having Beefs On Multiple Fronts
If you've been keeping tabs on IndyCar, you may be aware that Ferrucci has been feuding with ex-F1 driver Romain Grosjean who drives for Juncos Hollinger Racing. That goes back a few races and manifested itself on track during races, and that rivalry heated up again on Saturday.
Grosjean was knocked out of qualifying in the first round and will start the race in P15. While his last lap had a bit of scruffiness that probably kept him from moving on, Groshean was incensed about what he saw as Ferrucci blocking him on track.
Grosjean ran over to Ferrucci's pit box and spoke to team president Larry Foyt about the blocking.
Did you see the Foyt team member do the crying thing at the end of the interview right behind Grosjean? I did.
I like Grosjean a lot, but I have no clue why he didn't track down Ferrucci to talk this over. Going to the team boss was an interesting movie.
Then again, he saw how quick Ferrucci was to fly off the handle with Kirkwood, so maybe it was a smart move.
