Indy NXT Driver Shows Off Fantastic Detroit Lions Tribute Helmet

Indy NXT is the NTT IndyCar Series' direct feeder series and although the cars aren't as fast, the helmet game in Indy NXT is strong.

Case in point: the lid that driver Nolan Allaer will be wearing when he hits the streets of Detroit this weekend.

And what better way to get those fans on your side than paying tribute to the hometown team, and what a tribute it is.

Now that's a lid.

Fantastic execution and the Lions' signature Honolulu blue goes nicely with Allaer's Martini livery.

Which, by the way, is one of the greatest liveries in racing. It doesn't matter what series it is, if you slip that light blue, navy, and red stripe pattern on anything with wheels, it will look phenomenal.

In fact, I'd put it in a tier with any Ferrari Rosso Corsa livery and the traditional powder blue and orange Gulf livery as the best ever. It's honestly criminal that we don't see it in F1 anymore, but thank goodness Indy NXT is here to give it some love.

If this idea sounds familiar, it's because this is the second football helmet-inspired crash helmet we've seen in the last few weeks.

Earlier this month for a pair of races on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, driver James Roe showed off a Notre Dame Fighting Irish brain bucket that was just top-notch.

Now, according to his bio on the Indy NXT website, Allaer gave up racing when he was a kid to play hockey. That got me thinking, next season, could we see a Red Wings tribute lid?

I don't know if the shape of a hockey helmet translates to a crash helmet as well as a football helmet does, but I'd like to see someone give it a shot one day.
