We've Got Some Heated Words Between Williams' Logan Sargeant And An Indy 500 Champ

I didn't expect to see a little F1-IndyCar cross-series smack-talking, but that's what we appear to be getting courtesy of Williams driver Logan Sargeant and ex-F1 driver turned Andretti Global IndyCar driver Marcus Ericsson.

IndyCar is taking a break because of the Olympic coverage that will take over the networks of the series' broadcast partner NBC. Meanwhile, Formula 1 is in Belgium this weekend for its last race before it takes summer break.

But while the racing is cooling down a bit, things are heating up between Sargeant and Ericsson.

It's been a tough sophomore season for Sargeant who is one of three drivers (Sauber's Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are the others) who haven't scored a point this season. It's also been a tough year for Williams at large, as they've only scored four points in total and are in P9 in the constructors standings.

This reportedly came up when Ericsson — who spent a few seasons in F1 with Caterham and Sauber — appeared on Sweden's Viaplay Formula 1 podcast.

"I was also told this weekend by some American friends who know Sargeant, that he doesn’t have fun in that team," Ericsson said, per Racer. "He thinks it’s really hard, and apparently he and (Williams James Vowles don’t even talk with each other anymore. They barely greet each other. It’s completely cut off between them."

Sargeant Fired Back At Ericsson's Claims

The 2022 Indianapolis 500 champ's words did not go unnoticed and Sargeant responded ahead of this weekend's race at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

"Marcus Ericsson has a reputation of talking about other people without ever even having a conversation with me in his life," said Sargeant. "So yeah, it doesn’t carry any weight. It’s not true.

"I just had a conversation here with James 20 minutes ago. And most importantly, me and James, we both come here and we want to do the best for the team, we both work in the same direction for what is best for the team, and ultimately, what is best for the team is best for me. So it’s just completely untrue.

"I’ve never spoken to [Ericsson] in my life, so I don’t plan on it either way."

Whoa! Tell us how you really feel, Logan!

What could get very interesting is that given the robust driver market, it would appear that Sargeant's time in F1 (or at the very least with Williams) could be winding down.

Where could he go next? Well, if there are seats available, IndyCar would be a natural fit.

Could we see Ericsson and Sargeant settle their beef on track next season?

Who knows? But that would certainly be some must-watch racing when the IndyCar Series makes its debut on Fox next season.
