Giannis Antetokounmpo Gets Super Emotional After Pushing Greece To First Olympic Bid Since 2008
Giannis Antetokounmpo had an emotional moment to himself after putting his home country of Greece on his back and making history for his country over the weekend.
Over the past few days, a number of international basketball tournaments featuring 24 teams fighting for four spots wrapped up to finalize the field for the upcoming Paris Olympics. One of those four teams that will head to Paris later this month is Greece after beating Croatia 80-69 on Sunday.
As the final buzzer sounded, Antetokounmpo was seen sitting on the bench crying as two of his kids surrounded him while waving signs that read ‘Paris 2024 Bound.'
It's pretty self-explanatory as to why Antetokounmpo was overcome with emotion. He had just helped push his national team to its first Olympics since 2008, a full five years before his rookie season in the NBA and well before his children entered the world.
The 29-year-old scored 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists in Greece's double-digit win. Antetokounmpo's brother, Kostas, is also a member of the Greek national team but did not play during the win over Croatia.
While Greece's win over Croatia is the one many will remember, we can't overlook the team's win over Luka Doncic and Slovenia in the semifinal matchup.
The four teams who qualified for Paris in recent days include Spain, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Greece. That foursome will join Serbia, Germany, USA, Canada, South Sudan, Japan, Australia, and the host country of France.
